Rejoice - Voices at Christmas This tight ensemble of 19 well disciplined voices declares their musical allegiances at the outset with two versions of Hodie Christus Natus Est; one a Gregorian chant, the other by Canadian Healey Willan. These 21 unusual selections require a high level of skill from the performers; an Ave Maria by Bruckner, for example. The only somewhat well-known airs are a haunting Robert B. Anderson version of The Huron Carol and Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming, performed here in an up-tempo, rather dissonant version accompanied by a throbbing drone of reeds. Grownup Christmas music for people who really want to listen. Wholenote Magazine |
